"I am worthless in my own eyes."

 

"Has it always seemed this way?"

 

"No," said Friend.

 

"What used to give you worth?"

 

"Something I no longer believe in."

 

"An ideal of yourself?"

 

"An image of myself living up to an ideal."

 

"But now you have neither image nor ideal."

 

Friend hung his head and held it between his hands. "I don't see how I can keep going. I'm going to die of it, you know."

 

"Die of what?"

 

"Embarrassment."

 

Director cocked his head. "What do you mean?"

 

"How can I face people?"

 

"Why can't you?"

 

"They'll know. They'll see it in my eyes."
