"I'm not so sure about that. There's no point in rescuing someone. The whole point of the labyrinth is to learn how to think."
"I don't know about that, Student," said Director. "It seems to me that there is indeed a different point to, a different purpose for this monstrous construction."
"What?"
"It's a spider web for trapping flies."
"So now we have a metaphor for our metaphor?"
"Yes."
"Who is the spider? The person who thought it all up in the first place?"
"No, actually, the spiders are people who found the web and instead of clearing it away made use of it to catch their proper food."
"What happened to the original spider?"
"He wasn't a spider at all. He was something like a silkworm."
"Then who made the web?"
"It just happened over time through neglect, the effect of the wind, and so on - chance."
"Then we have to go after these spiders. Worker, you'd be good for that."
Worker grinned. "I wouldn't mind clearing a few spiders out of the maze. Knock down those walls and away goes the web!"
"What do we have then?"
