"You know what's going to happen," said Student. "People are going to find a comfortable setting or two and never bother resetting to level or doing the permutations. Then they're going to forget what any of that is like. And the world will seem to them what they are comfortable with. And even if they grow uncomfortable, they'll be too lazy to try and find new settings that work for them."
"Maybe what we need are equalization consultants," said Director with a grin.
"What do we call thought equalization, anyway? Philosophy? Psychology? New Age something-or-other?"
"What's wrong with 'thought equalization'?"
"I like it," said Friend.
Student considered Friend for a moment. "Are there thoughts that you can't bring someone to like, no matter how well equalized?"
"I don't like the kazoo, no matter how well recorded, mixed, and equalized. It's the same for others with whatever they really don't like by way of thought."
"What thoughts don't you like?"
"Most of the middle ones."
"What? I thought those are the ones you like, especially."
"Just because I see a job that needs to be done doesn't mean I have to love the materials involved, however much I enjoy the work itself."
"How can you enjoy your work but not what you work with?"
"Remember, I like to boost the low and high and cut the mid. Oh, I examine the middle frequencies carefully, and I learn just how they affect the rest of the sound. But I like that space between low and high too much to let the middle stand." He smiled.
"I get it. You just need a break from the in-between. Here, get out of the way and let me start equalizing your songs. You're going to love this! I'll give you more space with better high and low end than you've ever had before. I brought a special signal processor just for you!"
