"Today's youth don't always appreciate the importance of ritual. We want to drive that home to them," said Elder.
"Well, I do my part. I always tell Student that first thing in the morning, right after the alarm goes off, I make myself a nice big pot of coffee, and stand in the kitchen next to the maker, and draw off the first cup just as it's brewed. Then I take a shower and come back and get my second cup."
Elder looked at Director for a long moment. "Daily rituals are certainly of some importance, too."
"What is the importance of ritual, Elder, in general?"
"Ritual is the bulwark against chaos. And our world today is brimming with chaos."
"What do you think causes the chaos?"
"Chaos simply is. It doesn't have to be caused by anything. It is the natural state of things."
"So we have to fight nature?"
"Yes, the nature of the world."
"The socio-political world?"
"That is a human invention against the chaos."
"But our socio-political world is failing?"
"Yes, miserably."
"Even though we are in the most powerful nation the world has ever known?"
"Even so."
"So your Celebration of Ritual is an attempt to stimulate youth to repair, rebuild, or build the socio-political world anew?"
"Yes, exactly."
