"But that's hedonism!" laughed Prudish.
"No it's not!" protested Student. "Just because you want to do what you enjoy doesn't make you a hedonist."
"A hedonist steers by pleasure."
"Who doesn't?"
"People who dedicate themselves to a cause." Prudish smiled with a touch of mockery. "Do you have a cause, Student?"
"What sort of cause?"
"Oh, any old sort of cause will do. Well?"
Student frowned and looked to Director.
"The poor boy can't tell up from down after what you've put him through, dear Prudish."
"Then how about you, Director. I know you're no hedonist. Or are you?"
"I like my pleasures well enough." He smiled.
"Yes, but how do you steer?"
"By ideas."
"Really?" Prudish didn't seem to expect this. "Just any old sort of idea?"
"Pretty much."
"You're joking, of course."
"No, actually I'm quite serious, as serious as this conversation allows."
"That's quite a qualification."
