Fear
Persons of the Dialogue
Director
Friend
"I'm afraid of the enigmatic in others," said Friend.
"There's nothing to fear in enigmas," said Director, "for you."
"Why for me? Why am I different?"
"You have an enigma in you, friend," Director said quietly.
"Doesn't everyone?"
"You know the answer to that."
"But the ones who don't have enigmas are opaque."
"What series of thoughts led to that statement?" Director smiled. "It's light from inside that makes the enigma. There are no shadows without light, and you can't see that there are shadows unless the surface is translucent. That translucence takes a certain amount of trust, don't you think?"
"But who are the translucent trusting?"
"Why, people like you - people who can guess their enigma."
"Why 'guess'? Why not shine light and know?"
"You want to know the enigmatic scientifically? I think you'll find, in that case, that there is nothing to know."
"Science shines a false light?"
"Of course! Science shines an artificial, a contrived light."
"What kind of light comes from within the enigmatic?"
"I'd like to call it 'natural' light, but I'm afraid that will only muddy the waters. Perhaps it's best to call it a light that consumes its own natural fuel."
"That leaves me understanding precious little of what you mean."
"Good - that should be all you need."
